Mòd Pheairt 2022

The Royal National Mòd (“Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail”) is returning to Perth for the first time in 18 years, running from the 14th – 22nd October 2022.

Scotland’s premier Gaelic festival, organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach, is a celebration of the Gaelic language, music and culture, promoting its relevance and value in modern Scotland through a varied programme of competitions, concerts and fringe events.

Regularly attracting international interest and online audiences, with competitors participating from all over the world, this 8-day festival has taken place in a different town or city each year since it began in 1892.

Having grown significantly over the past 130 years, the Mòd has become a national and international platform for the promotion of the Gaelic language, with over 200 competitions being held throughout the duration of the Mòd, ranging from traditional instruments like accordion, fiddle and piping, to solo Gaelic singing, storytelling, poetry, sport, literature, film and choir competitions. If you’re interested in competing in the Mòd check out the syllabus here.

In addition to these well-established competitions, this year’s Mòd in Perth will see the launch of brand-new categories such as Battle of the Bands and Tik Tok. The Royal National Mòd is very much open to both fluent Gaelic speakers and Gaelic learners alike, as well as newcomers who wish to learn more about the festival and join in with the celebrations.

In addition to the official Mòd competitions and events, a jam-packed programme of diverse fringe events run in tandem with the Mòd. The fringe is an imaginative and innovative event, which aims to be both aspirational and inspirational, pairing emerging talents with established acts. With activities for the whole family including live music, performances, workshops and more, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The return of the Mòd to the Perthshire for the 11th time during Scotland’s Year of Stories provides us with a great opportunity to celebrate the area’s rich Gaelic heritage and traditional music scene.

We have lots to share - Ossianic myths, our landscape, many notable Gaels, the song collectors, a Gaelic Society who’ve worked tirelessly to preserve and promote Gaelic across three centuries, the Perthshire & Angus Provincial Mòd, Gaelic Medium Education and huge repertoire of songs, poems, stories and more. The history and continuing traditions of the area are fundamental to Gaelic: past, present and future.

Perth & Kinross Council are working in collaboration with The Gaelic Society of Perth, Horsecross Arts, Culture Perth & Kinross, Live Active Leisure and other local partners to host Mòd Pheairt 2022.
