In 2018 Perth was voted Food Town of the Year at the prestigious Scottish Food Awards. This award recognises the significant contribution of our city’s chefs, food producers, shops, delis, cafés and restaurants to the thriving Scottish food scene, and as a city we were very proud to receive it.

A family business established in 1901, and now being run by their fourth generation in the hands of Linda Hill, Murrays Bakers prides itself on fresh, high-quality products at reasonable prices.
Murrays, a multi-award-winning bakery, produces a fantastic array of sweet and savoury products for their many loyal customers. As well as being awarded Scottish Bakers’ Craft Baker of the Year 2017/18, the loyal and hard-working team has garnered awards for their Scotch pies, chicken curry pies, sausage rolls, macaroni pies and bridies.
All of their butcher meat is from fellow award-winning local family business D.G. Lindsay & Son, and the recipe that they use for their pies today was perfected by Linda’s father almost 50 years ago. Murrays Bakers is also known and loved for its huge array of scones, cakes, fruit slices, sweet pies, doughnuts and iced buns.

The Cheese Byre is an independent family-run business based in Perth, offering a mouth-watering selection of artisan cheeses.

At the age of 12, Simon Howie started as a Saturday boy in a local butcher’s shop in Perth. After finishing school he worked his way up to owning his first shop in Dunning at the age of 19 and now runs a large company that supplies products to individuals, shops, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants.
Simon Howie’s butcher shop in Perth has won Scotland’s Best Butcher Shop five times in the last decade and is hugely popular among its loyal customers. This tradition and heritage doesn’t mean that Simon is not looking forwards, however, as he strives to expand the team’s knowledge and be as innovative as possible. He believes this can only be achieved by developing ideas and listening to customers.
Ultimately great businesses come down to having great people and many of the Simon Howie team have worked in the business for over 20 years or more. All the team’s hard work is validated by their high success rate in audits and awards, such as “Green” status with Morrisons, and various industry awards for pies, bacon and haggis.
