Last year I stuck up for the Fair City whilst chatting to friends (non of whom live here) when one
of them commented that they “didn’t think Perth ever had much going on.” I quickly jumped to
its defence, proclaiming that Perth shines brightly throughout the year.

Even in the dark, cold evenings of January and February this wee city still manages to put on a
show. Of course, I am talking about the Riverside Light Nights on the banks of the river Tay. A
free event that offers variety and family fun, there is something for everyone.

This year promises to be bigger and better than last year (and that was impressive), with seven
different themed evenings starting on the 27th January up until 14th February.

27th & 28th January – A Celebration of Burns
30th & 31st January – Superheroes
2nd & 3rd February – Super Bright Silent Night
4th & 5th February – Wonderland
6th & 7th February – Yellow Brick Road
10th & 11th February – Chinese New Year
13th & 14th February – St Valentine’s Day

In between these dates the lights will still be on for everyone to enjoy. With opening time at
5pm there is still time to take the children before bed or visiting straight after work with

There are so many different aspects to these evenings which will draw me in to each theme. As
a photographer the chance to admire the lights through a lens is overpowering; but I think this
is just a small part of the event.

This year you can also get a memento of your trip to the Perth Light Nights in the Photo Booth.
There are plenty of props to use or maybe you want to strike a pose in your own costume? This
is also free and lots of fun.
With Ad-Lib Theatre Arts on hand to bring well loved characters to life, the interaction with
children and adults makes this event really special. Last year little girls were mesmerised by
meeting a real life Alice and even the bravest of boys were on their best behaviour for the
Queen of Hearts. This year Batman and his Superhero pals are in town for just two nights, a
brilliant opportunity for all ages to see one of the coolest cars on telly right here in Perth.

A real assault on the senses as you make your way around; with music, food vendors, daredevil
fire performers and if you listen carefully you can still hear the river Tay racing by below you in
the dark.

The Perth Riverside Light Nights event draws the Winter Festival to a close on the 14th February.
Last year the Valentine’s Day theme even saw a romantic proposal for one couple! How sweet
is that?

I consider myself really lucky to live near to a smaller city that can still pack a punch and hold
it’s own against the big boys. One that provides an event programme that is continually
developing, Perth shines brightly all year round.
