This Valentine’s Day, we want to help you and your loved one enjoy the many romantic treats that Perth and the surrounding areas have to offer. And just as there’s a perfect someone out there for everyone, so there’s a perfect date for every kind of Valentine. So no matter what makes your heart beat faster, we’ve got some great ideas for you that would get Cupid’s seal of approval.

Remember also that these events are family-friendly and kids will love the various fun elements each night.

Sporty Valentine

If you and your Valentine love nothing more than breaking into a sweat and getting the adrenaline going (ahem), then you’ll have a fantastic time at Nae Limits activity centre at Ballinluig, a 25-minute drive north of Perth. They recommend a full day of adventure (£99) which consists of White Water Rafting on the River Tay, lunch in their on-site café then finishing the day with Quad Biking or Clay Pigeon Shooting.

To get kitted out for your sporty date, you can head to Campus Sports, Craigdon Mountain Sports or Mountain Leisure for the best of clothing and equipment.

Once you’re all fired up (or tired out!) you can head back to Perth and tuck into a delicious dinner at Pig’Halle Brasserie or their sister restaurant next door, the laid-back Duo.

And because you’ve burned up so many calories being sporty, you can treat yourself to a glass of something delicious at Grayson’s Wine Café afterwards – you’re (both) worth it!

Romantic Valentine

If you’re the classic romantic type, you can’t go wrong by starting with flowers. Perth has a diverse range of florists including The Rose House, Williamsons, Lorna Davies and McIntyre’s at Fair City Flowers. And if you’d like a vase to display your bouquet, pop into Whispers of the Past for some stunning ideas or even some lovely artificial blooms that can be enjoyed all year round.

We’re also spoiled for choice in Perth for jewellery – within just a few streets we have Byers & Co, Silver Linings, Number Five, Boo Vake, T. Paterson, TB Mitchell, Timothy Hardie, Cairncross of Perth and W.T.G. Henderson.

Valentine Perth

Once you’ve arranged your roses and popped on your new jewels, how about treating your loved one to a Valentine Dinner Dance at The Salutation Hotel in the city centre? You’ll enjoy a glass of bubbly on arrival followed by a delicious four-course dinner, then you can dance the night away to fantastic live band The Stingrays. With an extensive playlist from rock ’n’ roll and soul right up to current chart hits there’s sure to be a great mix! Tickets are £25pp; phone the Salutation Hotel on 01738 630066 to book.

Musical Valentine

To find the perfect gift for your music-loving Valentine, or to find some great tunes to set the romantic mood, why not pop to the legendary Concorde Music for a great selection of vinyl and CDs?

Or would you love to learn to serenade your Valentine with a fine guitar or buy them their own one? Bandwagon in Perth sells a superb selection, along with banjos, bodhran drums, ukuleles, keyboards, whistles and much more.

For some great live music, you can catch Inverness-based band Ralia or Glasgow-based Declan Welsh and the Decadent West at The Green Room just after Valentine’s Day, on the 16th and 17th February respectively. Or how about buying tickets for the all-new Brendan Cole live show on the 20th February for your Valentine? Tickets are available from Horsecross Perth.

If classical music is your thing, you’ll love Perth Piano Sundays on Sunday 12th February at Perth Concert Hall. The soloist on the day is Sophie Pacini, a multiple prizewinner in Germany who is developing a remarkable career internationally as a concerto soloist and recitalist. You can also book a delicious Carvery Lunch at the Concert Hall before the concert.

Afterwards why not pop to next-door restaurant Kisa’s for cocktails or a glass of Champagne? That’ll hit all the right notes!

Country Valentine

If you’re the country types who are more at home in wellies and tweed than evening dress and bling, then Perth and Perthshire have some great treats for you.

Make sure you’ve got all the right gear before the big day by heading to McCash’s Country Store, Boo Vake, Scottish Seasons or Ness for fine tweedy clothing and bags, or to buy your Valentine a lovely Scottish-themed gift of course!

Now, imagine your own private Landrover and Ghillie, mountain scenery and wilderness followed by a warming cup of coffee and a dram of Dewar’s whisky in a mountain bothy, or extend the safari and have a delicious Taste of Scotland platter. That’s all on offer when you book a Private Charter at Highland Safaris near Aberfeldy, a mere one-hour drive from Perth city centre, yet boasting some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland.

If you don’t fancy travelling, you can stroll round the picturesque Quarrymill woodland walk, a peaceful oasis right on the edge of the city.

After your country pursuits you can head to Ballathie House Hotel, on the banks of the beautiful River Tay, for afternoon tea or a delicious dinner in elegant surroundings.

Arty Valentine

To add a bit of art and culture to your Valentine celebrations, we’d suggest that you head over to Tayberry Gallery, Frames Gallery, The West End Gallery or The Picture Frame Maker, which are great for browsing, or for your Valentine to choose a gift that they’d love.

If you’re happy to have your date before the 14th (or to buy an antique for your amour), Lindsay Burns & Co Auctioneers offer a fantastic experience at one of their live auctions. There’s a General Sale on Thursday 9th February, with a viewing the day before. Bidding on that painting that your Valentine has fallen for is sure to make your pulse race!

Valentine in Perth

Are you or your Valentine budding Picassos? The newly redeveloped Greyfriars Art Store (formerly Dunn’s Art Store) in the city centre has everything you need for creating a masterpiece – or even just sketching for the fun of it.

There’s also a Valentine Special evening at Perth Concert Hall (Norie-Miller Studio, free but ticketed) featuring Lesley Mackie and Terry Wale, telling a love story that began at the theatre.

If all that culture has made you crave some fine cuisine, how about finishing off your day with an artful meal at 63 Tay Street, Tabla, Café Tabou, North Port or Grand’Italia?

And if you still want to discuss the finer points of impressionism or the winner of the Turner Prize, then head along to The Venue, where the fine selection of gin, rum, malt whisky and wine will be sure to inspire!

Thrifty Valentine

For those who’d love to celebrate Valentine’s Day but have a limited budget, we have some great thrifty ideas for you.

If you’re celebrating with your Valentine at the weekend, Scone Palace offers free admission to its Grounds and Maze (and Children’s Playground if you’re bringing the kids too!) each Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout February & March. The food shop/toilets are also open. Opening times are 10am-4pm.

There’s also Perth Museum & Art Gallery and The Fergusson Gallery, within a short walk of each other and free of charge to visit. Both have a wealth of beautiful paintings, sculpture and artefacts to swoon over.

You can follow that with a fun-packed Perth Treasure Hunt Trail, a self-guided Treasure Hunt suitable for all ages. Solve the sneaky clues set on buildings, permanent features and monuments to discover the location of the buried treasure. It costs only £6.99 for the trail booklet (which you buy online at the Treasure Trails website) and you could even win £100 in the monthly draw of correct answers!

For reasonably priced, delicious food (and to warm you up!) you could head to Café Breizh, Reid’s Café, Small Talk, Willows, Café Coco or Blend, or many more, for coffee, drinks, sandwiches and lovely pastries.

A spectacular light show for all Valentines

Following the hugely popular light display in November 2016, Norie-Miller Walk Light Nights will run from 28th January to 14th February inclusive, with a spectacular lighting display on show every night from 3pm – 10pm. The look and feel of the riverside walk will change throughout the run, making it perfect for return visits.

From the 10th to the 14th of February the riverside walk will turn into a very special lovers’ lane from 5pm to 9pm, with sparkling wine, chocolates, and food on offer, or as the perfect place for a romantic walk after dinner in one of Perth’s many restaurants.
