September means many different things to us all. The start of autumn, the leaves turning golden, the fruit and veg that’s ripe and ready to harvest. For this part of the world, it means the Great Perthshire Picnic!
So what is the Great Perthshire Picnic, and how can you enjoy the many treats and delights on offer? Who are Giraffe and why are they organising this month-long feast?
Read on for answers to all of this and more…
A chance to eat, drink, and be merry – then eat and drink some more
The Great Perthshire Picnic is a month-long series of more than 60 events, surprises, treats, workshops and special offers, celebrating the very best of Perthshire’s food and drink.
Perthshire is rightly famous for our fantastic chefs, award-winning restaurants, top-quality food/drink producers and delicious fresh ingredients. So what better way to show the world what we have to offer than a month of eating and drinking opportunities?
Among these will be:
- cooking masterclasses and demos,
- food and drink tastings,
- special drinks events where you can make/mix your own,
- amazing offers and discounts from eateries and food/drink producers,
- afternoon teas galore,
- pop-up cafes,
- one-off restaurant nights,
- musical treats, and
- charity events.
You’ll have the chance to visit cafés or restaurants that you’ve always fancied trying, revisit your old favourites (with a twist), learn new skills, meet the chefs and producers behind the names, and, most importantly… eat and drink Perthshire’s fabulous produce!
We couldn’t possibly list everything that’s going on during the Festival (check out the Great Perthshire Picnic Events page for the full listings), but we have some notable highlights for you. Firstly, though, let us tell you about Giraffe, who have been working hard behind the scenes to make this happen!
You’ve probably seen or visited the Giraffe cafés on South Street and Mill Street, but did you know that Giraffe is a social enterprise that trains jobseekers who’ve had barriers to the workplace? And that they also have a garden at Springlands and a plant centre at Ladeside?
Empowering people to work
Giraffe believes in empowering people and supporting them to move into the workplace, giving them choices and chances that many of us take for granted.
How they do this? It’s simple. Jobseekers who need extra support are welcomed to Giraffe and given work in one of their venues. They learn the necessary skills and gain proper qualifications. Jobseekers and volunteers can also access art groups, healthy living sessions, cinema, social trips and barbeques.
So as well as the skills, they gain friends, confidence and a sense of self-worth.
Sharing the love (of food!)
And that’s one of the reasons behind the Great Perthshire Picnic. The team at Giraffe would love to show local food and drink businesses, and the Perthshire public, how wonderful it can be – for everyone – when someone who’s been isolated from work is given a chance to shine.
The other reason is that everyone at Giraffe is a foodie! They want to spread the word and show people what’s out there in our wonderful county.
