“Cinema Paradiso” (“Nuovo Cinema Paradiso”) is a 1988 Italian drama film written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. We will be screening the handsomely remastered 25th
anniversary version from 2013.
The film opens in Rome in 1980, where the successful movie director Salvatore ‘Toto’ Di Vita (Jacques Perrin) has received news of the death of an old friend from his native Sicilian village of Giancaldo, which he left 30 years earlier. Alfredo (Philippe Noiret) was the projectionist at the local Cinema Paradiso throughout ‘Toto’s’ childhood and, under his fatherly influence, Toto fell deeply in love with cinema. Alfredo spent many hours with Toto, painstakingly teaching him the traditional filmmaking, editing and screening skills that eventually paved the way to his career in the world of filmmaking.
