Prince Charming @ Perth Theatre

Written by Jenny Worton
Designed and directed by Ross MacKay

Fine today … can’t get out of bed tomorrow. That was three months ago. I’ve been in these pants ever since.

It’s a lot of pressure being Prince Charming. There’s all those dragons to fight and kingdoms to save, not to mention being charming all the time. It’s enough to make anyone a little worried.

Holed up in his bed, Prince Charming is making a list of his worries – from being struck by lightning or getting stuck in quicksand to the problem of his unfortunate name. Somebody needs to come to our Prince’s rescue.

This new musical is funny, endearing and suitable for anyone who’s ever felt a bit anxious.

Age guidance: 6+

Approx running time: 1hr

‘I don’t save or shield them. It’s as bad as
I feared – they’re lost’

1840. A young governess agrees to look after two orphaned children in Bly, a seemingly idyllic country house. But shortly after her arrival, she realises that they are not alone. There are others – the ghosts of Bly’s troubled past. The Governess will risk everything to keep the children safe, even if it means giving herself up to The Others. Years later, confronted by the past she is compelled to account for what actually happened to her and the innocents under her protection.

This new adaptation of Henry James’ iconic tale, which was the original inspiration for Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, is a masterclass in stage-craft, with captivating performances, deliciously atmospheric set and lighting design and an evocative soundtrack, starring Janet Dibley (Doctors, EastEnders, The Two of Us) and Maggie McCarthy (Dancing on the Edge, Call the Midwife).

Clydebuilt Puppets: Call of the Loon Bird @ Perth Museum and Art Gallery

This truly magical story, ‘The Call of the Loon Bird’ follows the life journey of Little Eagle from a small boy to adult through adversity, illness and later success as a storyteller. In his youth, he rescues a ‘Loon’, a bird of great wisdom, who later helps him on his own journey through life.

The Call of the Loon Bird is a story of wisdom over intolerance and explores the stories and culture of the Native Americans.

This show uses a mix of rod and shadow puppetry and can be enjoyed on many different levels of understanding, as Clydebuilt Puppets combine storytelling, drama, puppetry and live music in a magical experience for children aged 5 – 12 years (and adults too).

Running time 50 minutes.

Firmly established as one of Scotland’s leading touring puppet companies, Clydebuilt has been touring the length and breadth of the UK since 1987 and has also taken shows to China and Dubai. The company is very experienced in rural touring, working in a wide variety of venues and enjoys contact with the audience after the show.

The Monday Night Thing presents

To coincide with the first Soutar Festival Of Words, In A Sma Room celebrates the poems of William Soutar through original music written by Debra Salem, Kevin Mackenzie and Paul Harrison. These settings reflect the wide musical backgrounds of the composers with elements of jazz, folk and classical music sitting side-by-side with the English and Scots lyrics. Originally commissioned in 2012 by the Friends of William Soutar, these songs formed part of a touring music and theatre piece. This evening will include some hitherto unheard songs, all of which will be featured on a forthcoming album. The composers are joined by Perth fiddler, Patsy Reid who was part of the original ensemble, plus guests.

Lost at Sea @ Perth Theatre

‘The untold war o’ man versus the elements. Oh, I’ll tell it to ye. The tale o the fishermen fightin the ocean. Yer in for a rough ride.’

A storm is brewing in a small fishing village. A young woman returns home, searching for answers about her father’s death. But as she begins to weave together the strands of her past, a mysterious force unravels family secrets.

Lost at Sea journeys through a labyrinth of myth and memory in an epic tale spanning forty years of the fishing industry. Featuring the voices of fishermen and their families in their own words – with music, songs and Scots language – it is the lyrical and powerfully evocative story of a North-East fishing family.

Inspired by the loss of playwright Morna Young’s fisherman father, Lost at Sea is a personal tribute to the fishing communities of Scotland.
