The Monday Night Thing presents

To coincide with the first Soutar Festival Of Words, In A Sma Room celebrates the poems of William Soutar through original music written by Debra Salem, Kevin Mackenzie and Paul Harrison. These settings reflect the wide musical backgrounds of the composers with elements of jazz, folk and classical music sitting side-by-side with the English and Scots lyrics. Originally commissioned in 2012 by the Friends of William Soutar, these songs formed part of a touring music and theatre piece. This evening will include some hitherto unheard songs, all of which will be featured on a forthcoming album. The composers are joined by Perth fiddler, Patsy Reid who was part of the original ensemble, plus guests.

Jenna Reid And Harris Playfair With Mr McFall's Chamber @ Perth Theatre

The Monday Night Thing presents

One of Shetland’s finest and most accomplished fiddlers, Jenna Reid is joined by long-time accompanist Harris Playfair, and the genre-defying string ensemble Mr McFall’s Chamber in a sumptuous double-bill of musical mastery.

Released in early 2019, Working Hands is Reid’s fourth studio album, featuring predominantly original compositions, inspired by lessons she took with Robert McFall, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s second violinist and leader of the revered ensemble bearing his name. Such was the connection and influence, many of the featured compositions are dedicated to the quartet and individual musicians – who not only went on to feature on the album, but now join her on tour.

Jenna will also be reunited with one of Scotland’s most highly regarded traditional pianists, Harris Playfair – an electric pairing, brilliantly captured on her five-star Live in Shetland record – offering a selection of traditional material, ahead of joining the McFall’s ensemble.
Six pairs of working hands, whose owners approach that work with enthusiasm and sheer love of the craft of making music.

Royal Scottish National Orchestra

Da-da-da-daaa! everyone knows the first four notes of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Now’s your chance to hear the rest – and it’s gripping: a no-holds-barred emotional struggle from tragedy to triumph, in some of the most dramatic music ever written. It’s perfect for our inspirational guest conductor Nathalie Stutzmann. First, though, comes something a bit gentler, as the RSNO’s Principal Flute Katherine Bryan and harpist Pippa Tunnell perform Mozart’s elegant – but deliciously witty – Concerto for Flute and Harp.

The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra New Waves @ Perth Concert Hall

New Waves: Antonio Carlos Jobim/Fats Waller
featuring Tommy Smith, Irini Arabatzi, Mario Caribe & Brian Kellock
arranged and orchestrated by Bill Dobbins

Antonio Carlos Jobim was the foremost composer of authentic Brazilian bossa nova, and his crossover projects with Stan Getz made him a household name. Few are better placed than saxophonist Tommy Smith, Brazilian guitarist Mario Caribe, and vocalist Irini Arabatzi to articulate the aspirational and escapist nature of this cool, soft, sinuous and sensual music.

The immortalised jazz pianist Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller was an influential, game-changing composer and instrumentalist. He will be lovingly restored as the SNJO visits Waller’s popular repertoire. Few pianists are more qualified to bring fresh interpretations to Waller’s challenging innovations than Scotland’s Brian Kellock.

When Bach applied for the position of Kantor at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche in 1722, he was only third choice for the post. Telemann turned the offer down after some deliberation and Graupner was not released from his post of Kapellmeister in Hesse. ‘Since we cannot get the best, then we will have to settle for average’, the Council concluded, as it handed the title to Bach. Join us as we step back in time and explore the programme that Bach put together for this fateful application, a move that would shape the history of western music for centuries to come.

Fergus McCreadie Trio @ Perth Theatre

The Monday Night Thing presents

Fergus McCreadie is a phenomenal young pianist. Still only twenty-one and twice winner of the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year Under 17 title, he released his first album, Turas, in early 2018 this year to rave reviews, including a five-star rating from the Scotsman. His music is dynamic and beautifully crafted, reflecting the Scottish landscape and musical traditions while honouring the American and European jazz legacies, and his rhythm team, David Bowden (bass) and Stephen Henderson (drums) from the award-winning quartet Square One match his verve with precision and unerring empathy.
