Perth’s Old High Street and the adjoining New Row is one of the city’s hidden gems; bookended by St Paul’s Church and Thimblerow Car Park people often overlook it in favour of the larger, busier main streets.  Well, we’re here to say ‘take another look!’  Just a short, two-minute walk from the pedestrianised centre you will find a fantastic range of Perth's independent retailers all offering a quality alternative to the big name, High Street chains. 

Come for a wander and you'll find out why it’s worth another look at two of Perth’s oldest and most interesting streets. 

The Heart of Hairstyling 

The Old Street and New Row have a total of eleven hairdressers and barbers, offering everything from a quick-drop-in-trim to a luxurious two hours of pampering and style.    

With Willeens, Iris, Clare M, Joans, Loyal Fringes, The Finishing Touch, Colours and Muirheads, all on Old High Street, this part of town truly is the heart of hair styling, with the majority of Perthshire’s men and women flocking to this part of the city to have their tresses cut, coloured and styled.  Add in Top Class and Gentleman’s Hairdressing and you’ve got a full house!  Fancy adding a beauty treatment to your pamper day?  Amanda’s Beauty Boutique and Rae Peacock Hair & Beauty will offer all the treatments you expect from top to toe. 

Two stylists for a particular mention are Rae Peacock Hair and emmie hair.  As a newcomer to the hair styling hub that is New Row and Old High Street, emmie hair, is a great addition with a fresh new shop front and carrying all the best hair ranges.   

Rae Peacock Hair & Beauty has wowed the people of Perth with his homemade chocolate brownies and amazing cocktails; and we have heard the cut and colour is a big hit too!  An experienced stylist and local boy too, Rae spent many years working between Harvey Nichols and Harrods in London and was involved in various photo shoots and catwalk events.  

In fact his magic hands have styled many famous heads including supermodels Yasmin Le Bon and Jodie Kidd!  Rae and his husband Craig’s vision to have every person LOVING their new hair when they leave the salon, is working a treat. 

Kid Time

Got some little ones at home and looking for something to do?  The Workshop in New Row is jam packed with modelling, sculpting and drawing classes for the whole family.  A great birthday party or school holiday treat destination, the team here will keep everyone occupied and interested.  

If, however your kids looking to be more active then it’s the Julie Young Dance Studios, teaching tap, ballet, highland dancing, jazz and tap for adults too.  Julie’s dancers have had huge success over the years. 

Still catering to the kiddies or adults,gotta love a jigsaw puzzle! is Perth’s most well-known toy shop, the magical Fun Junction. With their shop on Old High Street and sale shop two doors down, these stores are without doubt where pocket money was meant to spent.  We heard even Santa gets some toys from here for the boys and girls of Perth, and you can pop up to Corkys News for a sweety after all that hard work spending your pennies!

Julian Jardine’s Gallery stunning art gallery is just the shop you need to bring personality to your home.  Featuring his own original work which focuses on breath-taking animal sculptures he also shows work by other sculptors and jewellery, paintings and prints from some of Scotland and the UK’s leading artists.

The shop as a distinct creative vibe to it and you will find quality artisan products for all budgets and interior styles. Julian also offers art and pottery classes for children and adults in his studio on New Row. 

When it comes to interiors in Perth, there is one name that comes to everyone’s lips.Acorn Fabrics. The wonderful thing about this part of town too, is that it houses a host of the most amazing experts, the businesses you always call on when you want to recycle, mend, upcycle or alter or get some advice.  Custom Tailor at the very top of Old High Street are experts in their field, tailoring and altering your favourite clothes and linens, and round the corner on New Row is Care Clean, who specialise in cleaning your garments.   Needing that favourite piece of furniture upholstered?  Perth Upholstery Shop hidden away through the arch on Old High Street, is there to expertly restore that treasured piece. 

Mortgage Managers has friendly, knowledgeable staff who are on hand to help you cut through the jargon and find a mortgage that best suits your requirements. Whether you are a first-time buyer, moving house, remortgaging or looking to become a landlord, they have the expertise to help you move along the property ladder. 

Perth City Kilts is certainly an expert in the area of quality Highland wear for men, women and children. They offer a hire service for weddings and other occasions and their choice covers both traditional and international tartans through to modern, contemporary weaves. As you’d expect from an expert you can ask for all the advice you require to ensure you’re wearing your Highland Outfit correctly! An extensive range of highland wear accessories, shirts, mini kilts and shawls make this a little slice of Scottish heaven. 

An award-winning butcher of national acclaim, Simon Howie’s home on Perth’s Old High Street has become something of an institution in our city centre.  All that you’d expect from a family-run butcher, with the added extra of their own-brand, quality ready-meals and all the tasty little mustard and chutney side accompaniments your tastebuds desire! 

Finally, we have the experts in The Bike Station, a charitable company helping us all get on our bikes.  They upcycle donated bikes and sell them at affordable prices and use the proceeds to support their aims. As well as this, they run “fix your own bike” sessions in their workshops and manage the Dr Bike mobile bike repair service; work with community and youth groups; and offer opportunities for inmates in Scottish prisons to develop skills and self-worth through working on donated bikes.  

A great place to get your kids first bike, or maybe event one for yourself whilst supporting this amazing charity. 


Enjoy A Welcome Rest 

Whilst the Café Quarter in Perth is where many of our cafes and bars reside, Old High Street has a couple of real gems tucked up its sleeve.  They offer warm friendly service and a great choice of hot snacks, sit down meals and delicious home baking, and if you fancy something a little stronger, you can pop into Ormond’s Bar where you will be guaranteed a warm welcome and some great chat from the locals.  Oh and don’t forget no driving when drinking, pop next door to Ace Taxis, who will take you safely to wherever you would like to go. 

The New Manna House mantra is great food and strong coffee, and we can attest to that, working with local suppliers and with daily newspapers on hand to browse over, it’s a great way to start your day.  

Further up the street and you find Blend.  Owned by a band of friends whose aim is to ‘make your day’, Blend Coffee Shop is warm, friendly mix of hipster chic, quirky surroundings and big comfy couches.  You can drop in for a hot drink – they serve up real, loose-leaf tea, freshly ground coffee and divine hot chocolate – or stay a wee while and enjoy soup, paninis, pastries and mouth-watering home baking.

Last but not least, we come to Claymore Crossfit and RX Sports Massage.  Claymore Crossfit owner Chris Brown was working in various gyms in the area when he discovered Crossfit and quickly spotted that the training was not only effective, but the progress people were making from using the workouts was noticeable.
