George Street

Perth’s George Street is brimming with fabulous independent shops, quality food and drink, and a wonderful sprinkle of culture for good measure.

It’s a wee bit quirky, brilliantly diverse and every single one of the retailers love what they do so much that the owners and shopkeepers down this way are known affectionately by their first name and their shop name! It speaks volumes about the level of care that goes into what you do and sell when you become known as 'Provender Brown Diane', 'Whispers Laura' and 'Bean  Shop Lorna'!

Next time you’re out shopping in the city centre, walk a little further down Perth High Street and turn left – you’ll be very glad you did!

Due to covid-19 restrictions many attracttions are operating a little differently to usual.  You'll see that we've linked you straight to the individual attracttions websites - or social media pages - and we would advise you to check opening hours and rules before you travel.

Foodie Heaven

Mouth-watering just-baked bread, some of the finest Scottish gins and cheeses, and the rich smell of coffee beans roasting – George Street celebrates a great many highlights from Perthshire’s local food scene.

One of the city's newest indies and most delicious bakeries, the wonderful Casella & Polegato is headed up by Denis Casella, a man who claims he was born ducted in flour. Denis grew up in a bread making family in Italy, and eventual trained to become a professional baker himself.  His deep passion to achieve perfection saw him travel around Europe, and as far afield as Japan - and we're very glad he chose Perth as his stopping place!

The freshly baked artisanal breads are baked at their production kitchen in Whitefriars, just a short walk away, and arrive warm each morning for their queues of regular customers. A particular favourite is their sourdough - which they make in small batches, true to an authentic recipe.

If artisanal produce is what you're after, then this fabulous deli is exactly where you need to be. Provender Brown offers a mouthwatering selection of local Perthshire produce - Perth Farmers’ Market fans will find a fantastic selection of their favourite producers for buying all month round - as well as goods from Scottish and UK based artisans, specialist European producers and other carefully chosen international ingredients. They also stock a wonderful array of jams, honeys and chutneys, chocolate from some of our country’s finest chocolatiers and a bounty of rapeseed and olive oils. Add to that list biscuits, pies, herbs and spices… in fact, on a recent visit, we spotted banana ketchup!

They boast an amazing cheese selection, expansive deli counter and bottles upon bottles of incredible wines, gins and spirits. Fans of this long-standing Perth Indie - it was established in 2004 - know that the perfect place to stock up before entertaining guests or enjoying a Saturday night in front of the telly and Diane, Martine and the team will keep you right with their incredible knowledge and passion for all things food and drink. In more recent years they have become known as Perth City Centre's home of gin, stocking over 60 distillers and hosting the annual Wee G & T Festival (lockdown allowing!) as part of their offering to the city.

The Bean Shop Coffee

Coffee lovers rejoice: Lorna and John Bruce from The Bean Shop have been brewing up a coffee-flavoured storm since they opened in 2003. Wafts of freshly-roasted coffee aromas greet you upon entrance, along with a friendly smile and a sample of freshly ground bean-to-cup coffee to enjoy while you browse.

They hand-roast their beans in small batches in their george Street basement, guaranteeing a freshness that's heard to beat!  As well as coffee, they also offer multiple varieties of loose leaf tea and all of the accoutrements one could possibly want to buy including mugs, teapots and thermos takeaway cups. Find out more about Lorna in her Big Personality story.

Come In, Sit Down, We’re Glad to See You!

Take the weight off your feet after a busy few hours of shopping in some of the city's cafes, restaurants and bars.

The George Street Tea Room opened in January 2018, and boasts the most unique crockery - our personal favourite is a duck-shaped teapot! With a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, and delicious soups, cakes, and more on offer, this is a lovely little place to watch the world go by.

Right at the top of Gillies lies The Eatrium - A step up from the usual in-house eateries. Home-baking, great coffee, comfortable sofas and enviable views across the rooftop of Perth Concert Hall this is a perfect location for a daytime catch up.

Pizza and pasta is the order of the day here at Broth3rs, where it is created in an open kitchen, perfect for those who appreciate the artistry behind their meals. The sights and smells certainly do whet your appetite and with their famed three-course lunch for just £7.95 you'll be tempted to stay and enjoy it all!

The bright and airy Cafe 80 enjoys one of the best spots in town, sitting as it does on the corner of George Street and Tay Street. To drink, try one of their freshly ground coffees, or if its something a little stronger you're after then we highly recomend the cocktails!  Food starts with breakfast rolls, and opens out to light lunches, cooked specials and a delicious range of cakes, bakes and desserts..

Brewdog know their craft beer inside and out. If you're new to this growing phenomenon then this is the place to be: they offer a range of beer flights, allowing you to try a bunch out and see what you like best! Fresh stonebaked pizzas are served till late if you get peckish - oh, and they're dog friendly too. The perfect way to kick back on a Friday night and unwind with friends.

At Grand Italia Mario and his team throw open a big, fat, warm welcome to the people and visitors of Perth and offer authentic Italian food such as pizzas, pastas and a la carte Italian specials. The lasagne is, as you’d expect, exceptional and so is the seafood linguine. In fact, it’s all good - make sure you book up early.
